As the weather heats up, annual rituals in Comox include cadet training at HMCS Quadra, beach fires and Filberg Summer Concerts. Just as the Filberg Festival does, the three summer concerts offer crowd-pleasing Canadian talent, including some of the Comox Valley’s best.
This year’s genres touch on blues, rock, folk and country, beginning with local singer-songwriter Keisja Cox opening July 21 for Jordan McIntosh.
Winner of the Country Music Association of Ontario’s 2014 Rising Star Award and a top-six finalist in the CCMA Discovery Program, McIntosh is riding his first full-length album. Title track Steal Your Heart is the second single released from the album.
Used to performing live, in 2014 alone he sang at Manitoba’s Dauphin Country Fest, the Havelock Country Jamboree, PEI’s Cavendish Beach Music Festival and the giant Boots and Hearts festival in Ontario.
Mature beyond her years, Cox sings straight from the heart. The 17-year-old Courtenay resident won the Great Canadian Song Race at 15.
Passionate singer WiL hits the stage Aug. 19 after what is bound to be a strong set by Cory Woodward.
WiL’s profile is growing thanks to songs that include There Is, Here We Go, Look Around, Hold Me On and Roam, which became an anthem to Travel Alberta’s award-winning media campaign Remember To Breathe.
His latest album El Paseo was nominated for Solo Roots Album of the Year at the 2015 Western Canada Music Awards. To hear him at his best, you need to catch WiL live.
Woodward is the Bear of the popular Vancouver Island trio Lion Bear Fox. The Edmonton-born singer-songwriter has his own production company Little Bear Music and released a CD titled The Bear last year.
Country-rock star Aaron Pritchett and the talented local Luke Blu Guthrie Band close the summer series Aug. 25.
While growing up in a small northern B.C. town, Pritchett was first influenced by ’80s rock before a love of country music took hold because he could relate to the stories in the songs.
His hits so far include Big Wheel, Hold My Beer, Let’s Get Rowdy and his newest tunes led by Boat on the Water, Hold You Like My Whiskey and Wake You with a Kiss.
He’s coming off a cross-Canada tour and the release of a greatest-hits package in 2015.
Between them, Guthrie and bandmate K.C. Hingley cover a gamut from blues to roots to country to folk. Guthrie was nominated by the Vancouver Island Music Awards as Male Songwriter of the Year in 2012 and Roots Album of the Year in 2013. Hingley’s resume includes being a founding member and lead vocalist/bassist for the Pink Floyd tribute band Pigs as well as being the touring bass player for Alberta’s J.R. Shore and the Jury and a former member of Comox Valley band Boondock.
